If the icons on your desktop are corrupted, you can reset them.
Search your system for a file called "IconCache.db". It will be hidden, so you will need to view hidden files to find it. The usual location is Documents and Settings\
Once you have found it, delete it and reboot.
Type rest of the post hereIf the system will not let you delete it, reboot in to safe mode and do it from there and then reboot again.
When you login again, your icons should be recreated correctly.
This is similar to a trick performed on older operating systems where you delete a file called shelliconcache.
You can also do it with the TweakUI for Windows XP Powertoy, using the repair icons function.
