Bitmap or raster graphics are composed of single pixels each holding a color value. The smaller the pixel the more fine resolution is produced for the image. When zooming in eventually these pixels will show up as blocks and the overall quality of the picture will be less clear and diminished in value.
Vector based graphics on the other hand are more mathematical in nature as they are represented by points which then connect as lines or curves. This gives great ease in editing as objects can easily be manipulated in regards to their shape and overall dimensions.
The beauty of Fireworks CS4 is how it incorporates both of these modes of of graphic creation giving the user a lot of flexibility when creating web based graphics. For instance many web 2.0 type sites use gradients and geometric shapes for their design. This is where vectors come into play and this program handles them with ease.
Another great feature is the non modal way of editing these shapes. You can very easily click on any element in your design and grab one of the points to transform it instantly without having to go through extra windows or slowing down.
If bitmaps are needed then it can also handle those, perhaps not quite as much as a competing product such as Photoshop, but for most needs it will get the job done. There won't be quite as many filters available for the more special types of effects but for day to day work you probably won't miss those features anyways.
By combing the two you get the best of both worlds without the need to having to shuttle back and forth between other programs. Add to the overall quick workflow and you will be prototyping websites in no time.
